It’s Fall ya’ll! School is back in session and the temperatures (and leaves) are starting to fall – even in Texas, where I live.  Whether Fall for you means football season, fairs, or fun family times spent frolicking in the great out of doors, this simple, sweet, Fall flavored treat is one that is sure to please your whole crowd.  Why not make it tonite?


Caramel Apples – Traditional Recipe

Ingredients:

4 large (or 5 small) Granny Smith apples

1 bag Kraft Caramels

2 tbsp water

4-5 wooden popsicle sticks (available in most grocery stores)

12 – 16 oz of toasted chopped pecans (optional)


I used 4 large Granny Smith apples (shown below), and washed them really well with warm water and dried them with a paper towel – to clean off the shiny wax coating.

Remove all the wrappers from the caramels and add to a small pan along with the 2 tbsp of water.  Cook on medium high heat, stirring constantly, until it’s melted. (Note: This can also be done in the microwave by heating a minute at a time and stirring between cooking sessions.)

When melted, it should look about like the picture below.Melted carmel

Butter a sheet of wax paper, to put the dipped apples on, then one at a time, dip each apple in the melted caramel and allow the excess caramel to drain off.

With the caramel is still warm, roll one apple at a time in the chopped nuts.  A bowl of nuts (like the one below) is useful for doing this.

Place in the refrigerator on the buttered wax paper and chill for an hour or more.

Remove from the refrigerator and allow the caramel to soften a bit (appx 10 minutes). Enjoy!
